Complete design and implementation of the system for handling and storage of connecting aluminum rods of the reactor

Basic information

PME was tasked with a comprehensive project involving design, construction, manufacture and supply of aluminum reactor connecting rods handling and storage system used in environments with the highest demands on safety and reliability.

The customer's requirement was not just about the production itself, but the entire lifecycle of the equipment — from initial design and calculations, via processing of technical documentation, up to qualification tests, quality book and commissioning.

Main challenges of the project

  1. Character of manipulated elements — aluminum reactor connecting rods require superior care, high accuracy and consideration of all aspects of reliability.
  2. Safety and stability — the crucial point was the assessment of the entire structure in terms of Statics, strength and stability. Every detail had to withstand tough simulations as well as physical tests.
  3. Regulatory framework — the equipment had to comply with the requirements of European legislation, in particular in the field of safety (CE certification), documentation and prescribed NDT tests.

Implementation procedure

  1. Conceptual and structural design
    • Analysis of customer needs and parameters of manipulated rods.
    • Design of handling and storage technology — with emphasis on ease of operation, minimization of risks and long service life.
    • Processing of 3D models, drawing documentation and digital simulation of operating states.
  2. Calculation part of the project
    • Static calculation of the structure — verification of the load-bearing capacity and loadability of individual elements.
    • Strength assessment — detailed inspection of stresses and deformations, assessment of service life.
    • Stability assessment — simulation of loss of stability under extreme loads (e.g., buckling or buckling of the structure).
  3. Quality book and technical documentation
    • Complete documentation containing all designs, calculations, drawings and methodologies.
    • Records of material certificates, inspection protocols and NDT tests.
    • System grasp of the project in accordance with the requirements of the nuclear industry.

    • Implementation of production in PME workshops according to the prescribed documentation.
    • The use of certified materials with an emphasis on the high quality of surface treatment.
    • Compliance with precise tolerances in the production of critical components.
  5. Inspection and testing
    • NDT tests (visual, capillary, ultrasonic, etc.) according to the prescribed standards.
    • Measurement of dimensional accuracy and geometric parameters.
    • Functional handling tests and load tests.
  6. Completion and certification
    • Elaboration of the operating manual including safety instructions and maintenance procedures.
    • CE certification according to the applicable European legislation.
    • Handover of a complete quality book and training of the customer service.

Project for ŠKODA JS a.s. was a demonstration of PME's ability to execute high-demand contracts with an emphasis on technical complexity, safety and precise documentation.
